How Much Is Your Business Worth?
Since the banking crisis in Autumn 2008 and the credit crunch that resulted, sales of businesses, especially SMEs, have fallen dramatically. We believe that for the next 5-10 years at least, only the best SMEs are going to be sold for a good price.
All business owners should have one eye on their eventual exit, and exit planning doesn’t necessary just mean minimising your tax bill.
So how to do you make sure you are one of those lucky ones? Here are a few ideas:
- Do you know who is likely to purchase your business? If not, talk to us & we can carry out a quick review of the market and your sector, and consider your alternative options – you could be quite surprised! You need to ensure your business is the most attractive it can be, for that most likely, particular purchaser;
- Have you ensured that your business has worth in its own right? Or is all the value in you personally? If so, what have you got to sell apart from a few assets? You need to maximise the goodwill value in the business, which includes making it as easy as possible for someone to buy it. Talk to us about how to build this value;
- Are you maximising your chance of receiving that offer ‘out of the blue’? Are you likely to be found by those large corporates or overseas buyers who are looking for a target to buy? Having a proposal land on your desk is a great place to start from, and makes the task of selling your business that much easier.
But these things can’t be implemented overnight, so the sooner you start thinking about this, the better. We offer a confidential, personalised 2 hour exit planning workshop, where we can determine the priorities for your business, produce some benchmarking statistics, and help you decide how to best approach planning for your exit.
Don’t let all those years of hard work and building a brand just disappear, when you eventually decide to retire. If you can’t sell your business, winding it up is not pleasant and usually quite costly too.
